For 82 years people have come to the park to enjoy the panoramic views of the ocean, downtown, Mexico and scenic surrounding mountain ranges. This truly is one of the region’s most treasured landmarks. And it is only a ten-minute drive from Interstate 8, twenty minutes from downtown San Diego.
This park and 2,000-seat nature theatre were dedicated in 1925 to the memory of Mary Carpenter Yawkey, whose vision for this land was to embrace the raw emotion of the landscape and provide a place where artists can inspire and people can celebrate in harmony with nature. Adorning the summit of the 1,370 ft. mountain peak is a historical 35-foot-tall white cross, symbolic of the Spanish Christian Explorers, who discovered the land and founded the first mission settlement in San Diego. The park is owned by a private secular foundation, made up mostly of the people who live within the surrounding community. It is a place open to all creeds, religions and nations where music and the arts act in concord with the sheer beauty of its breathtaking vistas.
Our “Music on the Mount” concert series will provide world class talent, showcasing up and coming, established and legendary artists who want to give back to the community. These concerts will also coincide throughout the year with the passing of every full moon, enhancing the already magical evening. Here you will be able to enjoy a variety of special performances, such as: Singer/Songwriters, Independent Folk, Jazz, and Instrumental Musicians, along with Opera, Choirs, Visual Performers, Dance, and Film. Our vision is to provide an uplifting and memorable experience with artists who compliment the unique setting and elevate the spirit.
Part of the proceeds of the show will go to benefit the private non-profit Mt. Helix Park Foundation, to help pay for maintenance and on site facilities, so it can stay open to the public, and continue to be used for wedding and funeral ceremonies, along with other gatherings and festivals. The foundation has no independent funds or source of revenue, and therefore is dependent on donations from generous individuals and groups to operate and maintain the park. Mt. Helix Productions, through the concert series, “ Music on the Mount”, will help to preserve the beauty and historical significance of the Nature Theatre and also help provide for more public programs and events that reinforce nature, education, cultural enrichment, and the spirit of life.
